I’m beginning year 2 at a new school district, year 20 in total as a school psychologist. I realize that there are probably many in a similar situation as I have been. You’ve changed assignments and find yourself at a new building.

What are some strategies for success in making it through a successful first year at a new building? This is not an exhaustive list, but certainly some things that I’ve found helpful.

1. Get to know the office staff. Be personable and friendly to them. These are the folks that will help you adapt the quickest. They know the ins and outs of almost everything in the building.
2. Promise less than you deliver. Who doesn’t like to be pleasantly surprised? And who hates being disappointed?
3. Volunteer for some committee work (but don’t overdo it).
4. Be visible. Be out in the hallways during passing periods. Make some appearances in the cafeteria. Eat lunch with colleagues.

I’ve always been of the opinion that it takes about 2-3 years to be very comfortable in any job in a school setting. So, I plan on keeping up with my new job tips. Good luck with the school year.
