Ask the Experts- Continuing Our Consultant Role

The National Association of School Psychologists recently completed an Ask the Experts Webinar titled “Strategies for Supporting Teachers Delivering Remote Instruction”, which focused on the role of the school psychologist as consultant to teachers who are currently providing remote instruction to students across the nation during the COVID 19 pandemic.  This question and answer format outlines the function of teachers and the way in which school psychologist can be the link between students and teachers in identifying the gaps in learning both for teachers and students.  This webinar provided some great resources for school psychologists that can be used directly in work with students regarding a format for teleconsultation using virtual pathways. In addition, there were also links and discussion surrounding communication or language that teachers may need when reaching out to students to address the social and emotional needs of students as teachers face a new interaction with students. The Q & A also identifies key points for school psychologist to as supports for teachers recognizing these new interactions may be more overwhelming than teachers, staff and students are prepared for.  Finally, there are resources to the technological requirements that have increased since moving to a virtual learning platform.  Lesson sharing and other efficiency measures are addressed as well as agencies to contact that can support collaboration. Key points include maintaining communication with professional learning communities at least daily, document services and support, seek professional development, reach out to teachers and see how you can be helpful and focus on our students.
